What is a Washout?
Technically, you can never have a split when the head (1) pin is left standing, regardless of the remaining pins standing or how they are spread out on the lane. There are many examples of "Washouts" that we've experienced in our unschooled bowling group, but Tom's today was a first!
It's been 26 days since Helene stormed through to devastate Asheville. Despite still not having potable water in a large part of the greater Asheville/Buncombe County region, businesses are starting to come back. I got a text from a friend letting me know my favorite pub/Friday hangout is open again (limited hours). If anyone wants to join me Friday around 6:00 PM at Jack of the Wood, on Patton Ave, I'll buy a round. Quite by chance, Todd also learned that Sky Lanes, which has been working as a disaster recovery supply location, was again open for bowling. So as an afterthought I called Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack, and they reopened that evening (that I called). Seven of us were able to get together today for our first post storm lunch and bowling outing. One step closer to normalcy.
Today's top bowler with a NET (total pins + handicap) 702 was none other than Doug "DOG" Kurtis. Doug bowled well enough in his three games to get his average over 3 digits and lower his handicap a few points. Doug was followed somewhat closely by Tom with a NET 678, who was easily the most consistent bowler and also the high Gross score for the day with 528 pins knocked down. Cary rounded out the top 3 with a NET 643 total pins.
Team competition, along with the league handicap format, was revived (continued) this week by popular demand. Team "King Pins", led by this weeks numbers 1, 2, and 3, top individual performers, rode a 17 pin handicap advantage to one narrow victory (game 2), and one not so narrow victory (game 1). Although they came up short to team "Livin' on a Spare", with Mike Raynor, Maurice, myself, and "The Dude", in game three, their totals were sufficient to carry the total pin count for the day (game 4).
Although the order has not changed, Tom and Doug made the most significant changes/improvements in their averages, lowering their respective handicaps 4 and 3 pins respectively.
I hope everyone reading this is doing well. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything. Until next week...
